Holding down the SHIFT key while dragging the Resizing Grapples maintains the aspect ratio.

The Control Shortcut Menu contains a Make Square command that adjusts the longer side of the Rectangle to be equal with the shorter side of the Rectangle (i.e. makes it square).

If the Fill Color Property of the Rectangle control is set to transparent (i.e. no fill) you must click on the outside edge of the rectangle to select it. Otherwise, clicking anywhere within the interior region of the Rectangle will select the control.
